Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor
8 out of 10 points and recommendedSmall, lightweight, inexpensive, f/1.8No AF motorA great little lens. I'm a new DSLR user and this is the first lens I bought (except for the kit one - 18-55 for my D50).

F/1.8 is my solution for "special" tasks, like weddings in dark churches, or concerts. It's not very sharp, though.
Af f/2.8 sharpness is much better, and at f/4 it's excellent. It makes this lens great for shooting products (like for ebay).
I bought a reversing ring for super macro, but since then, I haven't found any interesting spiders or insects to test it "in action".
There is no sign of CA, vignetting, or distortion. At least I can't see any.
The main problem with this lens is its lack of AF motor (but D40 owners aren't probably interested in such lenses). -
Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED DX AF-S Nikkor
6 out of 10 points and recommendedSmall, lightweight, inexpensiveNot very sharp, significant CAIt's my first lens and I bought it along with my first DSLR, the D50. Since I'm new to the DSLR world, I say, this lens is great.

Compared to compact cameras - sharpness and CA is great. If you want to buy your first DSLR, you'll be amazed how great your pictures are.
Of course, for someone who already owns a DSLR, this lens is just mediocre. It's not as sharp as its big brothers (18-70, 18-135), has more CA, more distortion, and much weaker build quality.
Overall, I like this lens very much, but after using it for several months I started looking for some more expensive replacement. -
Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED DX AF-S Nikkor
7 out of 10 points and recommendedSmall, lightweight, inexpensiveNot very sharp, significant distortion, slow AFMy first telephoto lens. I use it mainly for sports and portraits. It lacks VR, though, so you either need good light or a tripod.

There is some pincushion distortion. CA is not a problem. Sharpness isn't great, however.
Build quality is mediocre.
The AF is a bit slow, but if you take pictures of football players that are all far away from you, it's not a problem.
