The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj is the first compact digital camera to feature a built-in projector, which allows users to display their still images and movies on flat surfaces such as walls and projector screens. The Nikon S1000pj comes with a stand that holds it steady while the projector is in use, and the camera can be placed at a distance of ten inches to 6.5 feet from the surface on which the image is to be projected. Depending on the distance at which it is placed, the image diagonal beamed by the Coolpix S1000pj varies from five to 40 inches. A remote control is included, and the Nikon S1000pj's projector has an output of ten lumens with a 30:1 contrast ratio - perhaps rather dim and low-contrast, but then this isn't a dedicated projector, and the output will likely prove fine for its intended purpose of a quick impromptu slideshow in a dimly lit room. Battery life when using the S1000pj's projector is said to be in the region of one hour.

Beyond that standout feature, the Nikon S1000pj couples a 12.0 effective megapixel image sensor with a Nikkor-branded 5x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a useful 28mm wide angle to a 140mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.9 to f/5.8 across the zoom range. As well as true mechanical image stabilization, the Nikon S1000pj offers the ability to vary its sensitivity manually from a minimum of ISO 80 to a maximum of ISO 1,600 equivalent at full resolution. By reducing the resolution to three megapixels, this range can be extended to as high as ISO 6,400 equivalent.

The Nikon S1000pj is capable of focusing to one feet (30 centimeters) ordinarily, and as close as 1.2 inches (three centimeters) in macro mode. Coolpix S1000pj images must be framed and reviewed on the camera's 2.7", 230,000 dot LCD display as there's no optical viewfinder on this model. Images are stored on Secure Digital cards, including the newer Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) types, or in a 36MB of built-in memory. Power comes courtesy of a proprietary EN-EL12 Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that's rated as good for 220 shots to CIPA testing standards, and is included in the product bundle.

The Nikon Coolpix S1000pj will be offered from September 2009, with expected pricing of $430 or thereabouts. The only body color on offer will be matte black.
