PRESS RELEASE: Durst Rho 160 - the new, digital large-format printer at photokina 2002

Durst Rho 160 at photokina 2002 - the new, digital large-format printer at the largest fair for the photographic and imaging industry

The new Rho 160 flatbed inkjet printer with many innovative features and advantages for the screen printing market is being presented at photokina 2002 from 25 to 30 September 2002. At the Durst stand - Hall 10.1, Stand B010/C011- it will be printing continuously to show the public what it has in store for the photographic industry.

The Durst Rho 160 is a high performance, production inkjet printer/press, capable of printing directly on both rigid and flexible uncoated substrates (roll or sheet fed material). It is targeted at the entire large format imaging market, including commercial photo labs, screen printers, graphic display shops and commercial printers. The Rho 160 is designed for heavy duty, industrial, continuous production for indoor and outdoor applications.

In the photographic industry in particular the Rho 160 is an ideal complement to existing technology: one of the strengths of the new digital printer made by Durst is that a large number of media can be printed direct, eliminating the need for the intermediate laminating step.

At the highest print quality mode, the Rho 160 features an unmatched net productivity of 45m/hr. or 500ft/hr. The proprietary UNIX-based user software and high-performance RIP for all on-the-fly image processing (pixel interpolation, dithering/screening, sharpening, cropping, panelling and corrections) provide very fast operation with minimum hard disk usage.

It uses UV curable inks to print directly on a wide variety of uncoated rigid and flexible substrates at the same speed and minimises the variation in output appearance from substrate to substrate.

Direct digital printing to uncoated flexible and rigid media
Printed materials do not require any additional finishing and are ready straight off the press. The Rho handles boards, sheets or roll media up to 160cm (62") wide and up to 40mm (1.58") thick. This new, flexible production printer is ideal for customised graphics or print runs required for point-of-purchase, display graphics, banners and signage, posters, exhibition graphics, backlit displays, long-term outdoor graphics, vehicle graphics, rigid signs, etc.

Benefits
  • Durst print quality at high productivity
  • Designed and built for reliable, non-stop operation (continuous 24 hours and 7 days a week)
  • Worldwide service, consumables & parts
Key features
  • Prints directly to standard, uncoated roll media and boards up to 160 cm / 62" wide and up to 40 mm (1.58") thick (patent pending)
  • Proprietary UNIX-based user software with integrated high-performance RIP and on-the-fly image processing (pixel interpolation, cropping, panelling and corrections) and on-the-fly dithering for very fast operation and minimum hard disk usage
  • Durst's "Direct Digital Computer to Print" technology eliminates the need for time-consuming and costly film and screen set-ups
  • Prints to almost any media
  • Much lower production costs by printing directly to boards
  • UV curable, pigmented inks with wide colour space for indoor and outdoor applications
  • High flexibility with quick media changes to satisfy your customer needs
  • Simple one man operation
  • Continuous ink supply for non-stop operation
Computer to print technology
Durst's direct digital computer to print technology eliminates the need for time-consuming and costly film and screen set-ups and allows you to print your files at lower costs and in a fraction of the time traditional methods require. You can produce hundreds of prints economically as either one-offs or print runs, with fast turn around times.

Eliminates mounting prints onto boards
Because it prints onto materials up to a maximum thickness of 40mm, it can eliminate the need to mount prints onto boards. This helps to reduce both production time and cost, and increases the range of substrates available for printing.

High flexibility with quick changes to satisfy your customer needs
Patented roll to roll and sheet fed design (Durst patented flatbed technology) featuring a very high flexibility, and fast and easy media change from roll paper to vinyl to fabrics to screens to boards, etc. with minimum media waste and no size limitations. Print sizes exceeding the max. paper width are automatically divided up and printed in sections. The operator can select how oversized panels are split with the desired overlap being adjustable. This unique design allows virtually any size to be printed.

Simple one man operation
A clearly designed and easy-to-use industry leading interface guarantees truly simple operation. The Durst Rho 160 uses exactly the same UNIX-based user interface as the market leading Durst Lambda large format digital photo printer. The entire machine can be operated by only one person, including loading and unloading media.

Unattended high speed printing
The Rho 160 allows you to load media lengths up to 750m for long print runs and completely unattended printing for up to 4 hours (depending on roll length) with a print speed of up to 45 m2 / 500ft per hour at the highest print quality (360dpi).

Continuous ink supply
The Durst Rho 160 uses large, refillable ink containers for long run printing and to avoid running out of ink in the middle of a job.

Powerful Compaq (Alpha) workstation with proprietary UNIX-based user software with integrated high-performance RIP and on-the-fly image processing and integrated high performance PostScript 3 RIP by Durst Dice America (400 MB in approx. 1 minute with automatic file conversion).

Wide range of features to minimise wastage and maximise output
The Rho 160 benefits from many of the features developed and proven in other Durst digital products, the Lambda for instance. These include: autospooling with 'hot folders' for unattended printing, autonesting, batch processing for documents with multiple pages or print runs, multiple printing for optimal use of large media and fully automated cutting of selected media with the Durst Autocutter XV.
  • Autospooling function with Hot Folders and ASCII file support for fully automated, unattended printing
  • Autonesting feature for automatically printing different files and different print sizes side by side
  • Batch processing for very fast operation of documents with multiple pages or print runs
  • Multiple printing: print runs are automatically and on-the-fly duplicated (cloned) and printed side by side for fast operation, minimum disk space and optimal use of large media widths or board sizes.
  • High productivity thanks to the patented, continuous feed technology
  • Fully automatic cutting with the Durst Autocutter XY. The Durst Rho 160 prints the Durst Autocutter Barcode Information (patent pending) for fully automated, unattended cutting with the Durst Autocutter 62 XY.
