23:17 EDT - Regular readers may remember a brief news item we posted near the end of August, noting that Kyocera Germany had detailed plans to show a new digital camera under its Contax brand-name at Photokina.

Details at the time were (no doubt, deliberately) vague, but it was described as a "5 Megapixel [camera] for ... semiprofessional use". Our friends at LetsGoDigital.nl have now seen the camera in person, and posted a news item including views of the camera from several angles. Meanwhile, we now have specifications for the camera. The Tvs digital features a 1/1.8" 5.25 megapixel CCD imager coupled... (More)

Fuji's FinePix M603 digital camera. Courtesy of FujiFilm Germany, with modifications by Michael R. Tomkins. Fuji aims for convergence with the FinePix M603
18:14 EDT - Over the years, we've often heard "convergence" touted as the Holy Grail of digital photography - one product that can perform well at both still and movie photography.

Few products have come close to achieving this objective, probably because of the inherent contradictions in the idea. Video cameras rely on much lower resolutions than still cameras, but require much, much faster read-out from the sensor. Video camera buyers expect long, long zoom lenses that needn't necessarily be of very high optical quality (thanks to the low resolution); still cameras generally... (More)
