Consumer electronics and office automation company Ricoh has today announced a new digital camera model in Europe and Asia that offers a 3x optical zoom lens and six megapixel imager in a compact, affordable package.

The Ricoh Caplio RR630 features both an optical viewfinder - an increasingly rare option these days - and 2.0" LCD display for image framing and review, and accepts power from two AA batteries. There's a choice of USB 1.1 and NTSC / PAL connectivity, and images are stored on Secure Digital cards, or in 16MB of built-in memory. Four scene modes cater to beginner photographers, and while there's no manual controls, more experienced users will still have a little extra control over their images courtesy of exposure compensation and white balance presets. A 320 x 240 resolution video mode at 24 frames per second is also available to capture spontaneous movie clips.

The Ricoh Caplio RR630 goes on sale in the United Kingdom from March, priced at a recommended £129.99 inclusive of value-added tax. Plans for sale in regions outside of Europe and Asia haven't been announced at the current time.
