Sigma's DP1 digital camera. Copyright © 2007, The Imaging Resource. All rights reserved. Sigma's Foveon-based DP1 compact: specifications, photos

19:30 EST - Last September at the Photokina show in Germany, Japanese company Sigma Corp. unveiled a prototype of a compact digital camera that wowed those in attendance, and provoked lengthy discussions in forums around the world.

In a world where sensor sizes of compact cameras seem to be gradually getting smaller by the day, even as pixel densities and claimed ISO sensitivities (not to mention noise levels!) skyrocket, the Sigma DP1 marked a major departure from the norm. Based on the same Foveon X3 CMOS image sensor that Sigma is using in its just-shipped SD14 digital SLR, the DP1's has a light-gathering area an order... (More)

pma-badge.jpg DigitalFocus Rings in New Year

17:05 EST - The team attends Pepcom's DigitalFocus preview event at Treasure Island Hotel. The theme? Chinese New Year.

Yes, there was the free Wynn Hotel shuttle from the Las Vegas Convention Center to Treasure Island Hotel where the Imaging Resource news crew would be attending Pepcom's DigitalFocus preview event. And a long line for cabs. But doing the math, Senior Editor Shawn Barnett calculated a limo would be cheaper than two cabs. That's just how the evening began. To see what transpired, read our report, in... (More)

pma-badge.jpg Pasini Reports: Ten Minute Trade Show Tour

14:43 EST - See the whole show in 10 minutes.

On our way back from IDC's breakfast meeting, we stopped in at the PMA Trade Show just before the show opened. We ran through the second floor first and then went down to the ground floor to catch a glimpse of the show before the aisles filled. That two mile photo safari netted about 58 images to give you a quick glimpse of the show without burning any shoe leather. You can see the Flash slide show... (More)

13:30 EST - General Imaging rounds out its PMA 2007 announcements with the launch of the General Electric X1, undoubtedly the most impressive model in the company's debut.

The General Electric X1 offers eight megapixel resolution, a 2.5" LCD display, and a 12x optical zoom lens with the camera's standout feature - optical image stabilization. (The other GE cams all offer the ability to boost ISO sensitivity to reduce shake, but only this model has any mechanical form of stabilization). The GE X1 uses four standard AA batteries (with alkaline disposables in the... (More)

The General Electric G1 offers seven megapixel resolution, a 2.5" LCD display, and a 3x optical zoom lens that looks to be prism-folded so as to keep the entirity of the lens inside the camera body. The GE G1 uses a proprietary Lithium Ion battery, offers USB and NTSC / PAL video connectivity, and includes both 26MB of built-in memory and an SD / MMC card slot. Pricing and availability have... The General Electric E850, E1030, E1040 and E1240 all feature fairly similar styling. The first model is the GE E850, featuring eight megapixel resolution, a larger-than-average 3.0" LCD display, and a generous 5x optical zoom lens. The GE 1030 boosts sensor resolution to ten megapixels, but drops the LCD to a slightly smaller 2.7"-type, and includes a less versatile 3x optical zoom lens.... (More)

12:10 EST - Hewlett Packard has today announced three new digital camera models for its Photosmart series - the HP Photosmart M437, M537, and R837.

Of the three, the HP Photosmart R837 is perhaps the most interesting. Where past HP cameras have tended to all follow a fairly similar theme styling-wise, the HP R837 is a bit of a departure for the company in that it has a vertically sliding panel on the front of the camera body that (when closed) offers protection for the lens.
