NIKON COOLPIX CAMERAS USED BY THE UNITED NATIONS TO DOCUMENT HISTORIC EVENTS IN EAST TIMOR

MELVILLE, NY, September 25, 2001 - Nikon (www.nikonusa.com), the world leader in photography, recently donated four Coolpix 775 digital cameras to the United Nations (UN) to be used by the Office of Communication and Public Information (OCPI) of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). The cameras have been assigned to OCPI's public information officers based in East Timor's outlying districts to document events during this crucial period of nation-building, including the formation of the East Timor Constituent Assembly, which will draft the country's first-ever Constitution, and will also be used to train Dili-based Timorese journalists working either with UNTAET or with the independent press.

"Historical documentation through photography has always been important to Nikon," said Anna Marie Bakker, general manager, communications at Nikon. "So it was an honor to donate the Coolpix cameras to the United Nations for their efforts to capture democracy in action."

"The digital cameras from Nikon have helped to provide a wonderful boost in editorial coverage of our work here in East Timor," said Mitch Hsieh, UN public information officer. "We've found digital photography to be the most efficient and cost-effective way to capture images and deliver them to OCPI's headquarters in the capital, Dili, and we are delighted that Nikon can provide us with the means to do this."

UN officers in East Timor will continue to use the donated cameras to document events around the region to increase exposure in area newspapers across the world.
