Troubled online photofinisher asks users for feedback on what happens next...
IR readers Billy & Claudine Carter and Alan J. Bedenko both wrote in this evening to point out signs of life at PhotoPoint.com, the online photofinisher which has been mentioned numerous times on this page since it vanished along with its subscribers' photos last December. Our most recent update on the company, posted January 30th, suggested that it was seeking a way to return images to their owners. The domain had been restored, albeit with only a small text notice telling visitors that the site was down and to check back for developments.
Today, that page has been updated as follows:
"Updated: Tue Feb 12 10:57:30 AST 2002 The survey which follows asks PhotoPoint subscribers to say whether they would be willing to pay $24.95 plus shipping for a CD-ROM of their photos, whether they'd be willing to pay $5.95 per month ($71.40 annually) for the service if it was restored, and whether the ability to display their images on third-party pages such as the Ebay auction site is vital. An opportunity is given to offer an email address for updates to be sent as the situation progresses.
PhotoPoint.com is currently offline.
Please check back here (www.photopoint.com) for further developments.
I would like to assure people that their photos have not been lost, and are safe. However, due to the bandwidth, hardware, and labour costs, we are unable to put the site online.
Please take a moment to answer this survey. Only surveys with valid PhotoPoint username/password will be considered. Your first submission is the only one that will be taken into account. Please answer honestly, so we can do what is best for the membership.
This information will be useful in determining how best to move forward in allowing people to possibly get their photos back and/or have their photos online again. We are looking at various options for finding PhotoPoint members a new home.
Thank you for your feedback."
Note that the form is to be used only by existing PhotoPoint subscribers, and that only the first reply sent for each username will be counted. If you're not a subscriber to the service, please don't submit any comments...
