Market grows by 1/3rd thanks to strong 4th quarter...

Market research firm IDC has released its figures for US digital camera sales in 2001, according to an article on CNet.com. The report found that overall, digicam sales rose by some 30% with a healthy 4th quarter bringing in 40% of total sales for the year. Not only did sales increase, but the performance of the cameras selling rose notably - sales of units with LCD displays rose 20% from 5.4 to 6.5 million units, whilst sales of low-res VGA cameras fell by a whopping 40% to 1.5 million units.

Sony led the way in US digital camera sales with a 23% market share, followed by Kodak with 17%, Olympus with 16%, and Hewlett-Packard with 15%. The mainstream of sales was the $299 to $399 price range, in which cameras had resolutions of 2 megapixels or better...
