Japanese manufacturer's lightweight, compact digicam gets the once-over from Dave...

Kyocera entered the "subcompact" digicam derby last year with their FineCam S3, and is back this year with the upgraded S4 model, which boosts the CCD resolution to four megapixels. This is definitely a stylish, nicely-built little camera, and will likely find a lot of adherents on that basis alone. I found that it's image resolution was only on a par with competing three megapixel models though, never rising to the level I'd expect from a four megapixel camera. It also uses an external light sensor, rather than metering through the lens, so it can be fooled by light or dark subjects against contrasting backgrounds. Finally, it displayed the short battery life that's so typical of subcompact digicams. Definitely plan on picking up an extra battery to go along with it.

A nifty little design, but one that should be compared to competing three megapixel models rather than four megapixel ones. Check it out!
