Dave considers Pentax's 2 megapixel, 3x optical zoom offering...

When I tested the Pentax Optio 330 and 430 models a little while ago, I found them to be very well-constructed little digicams in the 3 and 4 megapixel categories, respectively. Now, Pentax has extended the bottom end of the Optio line with the two megapixel Optio 230. While many of its features are the same as the higher-end models, it's clear that Pentax is hoping to hit and maintain a much lower price point to attract more mass market business.

One notable change required by the lower price goal was dropping the all-metal body design of the 330 and 430, in favor of all-plastic construction. While the 230 thus lacks some of the exceptional build quality of the earlier models, image quality was quite acceptable, and the range of creative controls belies the 230's "low end" price strategy.
