Displaytech Microdisplay Engine Selected for New HP Photosmart 850 Digital Camera

LONGMONT, Colo. -- Oct. 29, 2002 -- Displaytech, Inc., the leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) microdisplays, today announced that its LightView(TM) QVGA Microdisplay Engine is featured as the electronic viewfinder (EVF) in the HP Photosmart 850 digital camera.

The HP Photosmart 850 digital camera is a compact, single-lens reflex (SLR)-type digital still camera and features a 4-megapixel CCD image sensor and impressive 8X optical zoom.

"Displaytech is proud to be part of this outstanding new camera from HP," stated Dick Barton, Displaytech's CEO. "The features of the HP Photosmart 850 digital camera, including our viewfinder, will provide high-end performance previously unheard of at such an attractive price point."

The EVF functions as an information center, showing a full array of shooting information and monitoring effects of image manipulation and control. Displaytech's microdisplay provides photographers with clear images, even under bright light, and delivers a visual resolution equivalent to approximately 230,000 pixels, nearly two times more than most direct-view LCDs found on the back of many digital still cameras.

"With the HP Photosmart 850 digital camera's high-end feature set, the camera called for a high-quality, high-resolution viewfinder. Displaytech's microdisplay engine proved to be the ideal solution, providing our consumers a true, 100 percent field of view as well as the ability to see the image under bright lighting conditions and to really focus on the subject matter to compose excellent images," said Dave Campbell, lead engineer, HP Imaging and Printing Group. "Displaytech's microdisplay engine offered HP the complete EVF solution, including easy integration, compact design, low power consumption and excellent image quality."

Displaytech's LightView(TM) QVGA Display Engine is a complete EVF solution; combining the display panel, magnification optics, and housing including dioptre adjust. The included QVGA microdisplay uses the company's proprietary FLC material, which switches faster than common liquid crystals, translating to smooth, accurate image reproduction. With a resolution of 320 X 240, the tiny 0.19" screen displays crisp, full-color images and easily readable text while minimizing power consumption.

"Offering a complete engine solution is extremely beneficial for our customers, and it's a strategy we plan to build on with both current and future products," stated Bruce Spenner, Displaytech's Vice President of Development.
