We told readers last night about an upcoming digital camera from Fujifilm, the FinePix A310.

At that time, fuller details were not available to us as the camera had not yet been announced in the USA. We now have full details on this new model courtesy of Fujifilm Germany and Fujifilm UK. As noted last night, this model will be coming to the USA in due time, but we don't yet have pricing or availability information for the US market. In the UK, the camera will be available this Spring, and in Germany from June 2003; pricing for both markets will be set at a later date.

Without any further ado, the specifications, product images and press releases follow. Clicking on any of the images will give you a larger version:

Fujifilm FinePix A310 Zoom : serious image enhancement

Fujifilm announces the FinePix A310 Zoom with 4th Generation Super CCD HR technology

12 March 2003

Fujifilm today announced the arrival of the FinePix A310 Zoom, a compact and stylish 'point-and-shoot' digital camera, boasting high image quality that belies its size.

The FinePix A310 Zoom is the ideal 'take anywhere' camera. It's sleek, elegant and handles brilliantly, but don't be deceived. This lightweight camera boasts heavyweight imaging capacity.

Successor to the popular FinePix A303 Zoom, the FinePix A310 Zoom is part of Fujifilm's latest line-up of digital cameras using the company's 4th Generation Super CCD HR technology to achieve sharper, higher quality pictures. The FinePix A310 Zoom uses 3.1 million effective pixels to produce an ultra-smooth 6 million recorded pixels.

With low power consumption, the benefits offered by the xD-Picture Card™ system, and an attractive two-tone metal style finish, the FinePix A310 Zoom offers a seductive combination of stylish image and technical ability.

Using these latest imaging innovations, the FinePix A310 Zoom is capable of capturing clear, colourful, noise-free images across a wide range of conditions. Whether shooting indoors or outdoors, the FinePix A310 Zoom will generate sharp pictures from which you can produce larger prints.

The FinePix A310 Zoom has a high-quality 1.5" TFT LCD preview screen and optical viewfinder. The camera is capable of recording movies and can also be used as a handy webcam, ideal for Internet enthusiasts.

Through the use of an optional PictureCradle™, the FinePix A310 Zoom enables the user to download images and charge batteries in one simple procedure - so there's no messing around with multiple cables each time the user gets home.

FinePix A310 Zoom features at a glance:

  • 4th Generation Super CCD HR sensor with 3.1 million effective pixels (delivering 6 million recorded pixels)
  • Fujinon 3x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-114mm on a 35mm camera
  • xD-Picture Card™ providing large storage capacity and low power consumption (256MB card now available)
  • Movie recording capabilities up to 10 frames per second (fps). Records movies up to 98 seconds (320 x 240 pixels) and up to 5.6 minutes (160 x 120 pixels) with a 16MB xD-Picture Card™ (included)
  • Fast operation and easy to use, just 'point and shoot' for lifelike images
Adrian Clarke, Fujifilm's Director of Consumer Products, commented, "Using Fourth Generation Super CCD technology, Fujifilm has created a range of cameras that contain much more than initially meets the eye.

"The FinePix A310 Zoom is a brilliant 'out and about' camera, which looks great, is easy to use and guarantees impressive pictures in a range of conditions. Don't be fooled by its diminutive appearance, this camera punches well above its weight."

Long lasting battery life
The FinePix A310 Zoom has been specifically developed to reduce power consumption. The 2 x AA alkaline batteries supplied with the camera deliver an impressive 250 shots under normal conditions (with the LCD monitor switched off). Ni-MH rechargeable batteries are also available as part of the accessories range for even better battery economy.

Ease of use
The programmed auto exposure and flash capabilities mean great results in many shooting conditions. The 3x zoom lens further enhances the creative possibilities, yet this camera maintains point-and-shoot simplicity.

Super CCD HR technology
Fujifilm's 4th Generation Super CCD High Resolution sensors can be housed in even smaller digital cameras, offering all the benefits of 3rd Generation Super CCD in a package two thirds the size. The benefits include:
  • Ultra-high resolution images
  • Faster shutter speeds for action shots
  • Low noise photography
  • Low light photography
Straight from the box
The FinePix A310 Zoom is supplied with everything needed to start shooting straight from the box. A full range of accessories including two AA alkaline batteries, 16MB xD-Picture Card™, hand strap, software CD-ROM, video cable and USB cable are bundled with the camera. The supplied software CD includes USB drivers, Fujifilm's FinePix Viewer 4.0 for image browsing, and ImageMixer VCD for creating multimedia albums.

Pricing and availability
The FinePix A310 Zoom will be available in late Spring 2003, initially from Dixons, PC World and Currys stores, at a price that will be finalised closer to the retail launch.

FinePix A310: Digital photography really is not hard

Fans of small and handy cameras will be excited about the Fujifilm FinePix A310, because it has that certain photographic something. Only 155 grams light, its design resembles that of the familiar FinePix A303. But theres a Level 4 Super CCD HR sensor hiding inside, with 3.1 effective megapixels. The suffix HR stands for `High Resolution, the ability to maintain a particularly high resolution with higher light sensitivity and low-noise pictures. The camera offers beginning digital photographers all that they need to take high-quality pictures: high resolution and sensitivity, as well as excellent colour representation. More ambitious photographers will surely recognize the value of the continuous shooting function and the subject-specific programs. The A310 is expected to become available in June 2003, the price will be announced at the market introduction.

Digital colour settings with the F-Button

One particularly practical feature of the FinePix A310 is its F- button: It lets you adjust the cameras most important functions, including the white balance and the picture size. It also lets you select the colour representation, and choose whether you would rather create the saturated, high-contrast impression that slide film makes, or the more balanced and natural colours of colour negative film. And for nostalgia fans, theres also a black and white function.

Whatever you choose, you can easily take natural, lifelike photos measuring up to 20 x 30 cm. The 3.1 megapixel Super CCD HR and the high-quality Fujinon objective lens with a 3x optical zoom make this all possible. With a resolution of 2,816 x 2,120, you can create files with up to 6.0 million pixels. The pictures are then transferred to the computer via USB - which is made even easier by the docking station, sold separately. The docking station also lets you watch video clips on your TV. Up to 98 seconds of video without sound fit on the included 16MB xD- Picture Card, when a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels is used; at 160 x 120 pixels, you can record for just over five minutes. The docking station also makes it easy to charge the camera's battery.
