We just received two sample images from Sony demonstrating the capabilities of its just-announced RGB+E CCD image sensor alongside an unspecified conventional image sensor.

If you've not already read our coverage of Wednesday's announcement of the new sensors, we'd suggest reading that first. Once you're familiar with what the RGB+E CCD is supposed to achieve, take a look at the two samples below and draw your own conclusions.

As always with this kind of sample image, we'd caution readers to bear in mind that it isn't clear what conditions the photos were taken under, nor whether they have been retouched in any way after capture (at the very least, it is likely that they've been resized and/or cropped since the images we received from Sony are only 1200 x 900 pixels).

You can find links to the unretouched image files exactly as we received them from Sony under the thumbnails, or click on the thumbnails themselves to see versions in a new window that have been resized to 800 x 600 pixels for onscreen viewing and labelled to avoid confusion.
