Hewlett Packard Co. has announced two new Scanjet scanner models that feature an unusual see-through polycarbonate window which lets you check for proper document alignment.

The HP Scanjet 4600 and 4670 appear to be the same basic 48-bit 2400dpi scanner unit, and differ only in whether or not a transparent material adapter is included, and which holder is in the product bundle (the 4670 has a heavier holder than the 4600). The scanners will begin shipping in late September 2003 and are expected to sell for an U.S. estimated retail price of $149 and $199, respectively. The transparent material adapter, optional on the Scanjet 4600, will cost $49.

Full specifications and the joint press release for both scanners follow.

HP Revitalizes the Scanner Market with Breakthrough New Design and Technology Innovation

NEW YORK CITY, Aug. 11, 2003 -- HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced two new scanners that provide the next evolution of scanner functionality and ease-of-use. The HP Scanjet 4600 see-through flatbed scanner and the HP Scanjet 4670 see-through vertical scanner offer a first-to-market breakthrough, ultra-thin design. At approximately the width of a spiral notebook and featuring an 8.5 x 11-inch see-through window, the scanners shed the bulky design of older scanners and now closely resemble an elegant picture frame.

The introduction of these ultra-sleek scanners marks the first stage in a series of introductions that reconfirms HP as the number one consumer technology company and the leader in the scanner market. Within the next several months, HP will be launching more than 100 new products aimed at giving users the most rewarding digital imaging and digital entertainment experiences. These new products will deliver breakthrough advancements around technology and ease-of-use, enabling consumers to enjoy more by simplifying the way people capture and share the important moments of their lives.

Although shipments of scanners have peaked in North America, InfoTrends predicts that successful scanner vendors will capitalize on replacement and upgrade sales opportunities1. Additionally, in a recent survey2 conducted by InfoTrends, it was found that scanners continue to be a popular consumer peripheral with 61 percent of U.S. Internet households owning a scanning device. As the worldwide scanner market leader, HP continues to provide its customers with increased functionality to meet the needs of consumers in the mature scanner market.

Consumers can use HP's new scanners to convert traditional photos, documents and book pages into a flexible format for digital sharing. Large items can be scanned in sections and easily reassembled using the included ArcSoft Panorama Maker™ software. Additionally, the scanners offer great flexibility and can be positioned in a variety of ways to capture hard-to-scan items, such as pages in thick books or other large items that don't easily fit on a traditional scanner bed. Both durable scanners feature a tough polycarbonate viewing window and chemically-treated tempered glass that resists scratching, chipping and breakage.

In addition to being flexible and resilient, the scanners also produce photo-quality results at 2400-dpi optical resolution and 48-bit color. The scanners offer Hi-speed USB connectivity, which is compatible with USB 2.0 specifications. Four one-touch buttons allow quick access to scan and copy functions, HP Instant Share technology or power-save mode. The buttons, located on the edge of the scanners, can be accessed whether the scanners are face up or face down.

Due to its unique design at less than one-inch thick, the scanners allow consumers to store the devices in a variety of locations, including a drawer, briefcase or bookshelf. The HP Scanjet 4600 scanner's holder positions the scanner horizontally on the desktop for use much like a traditional desktop scanner, while the HP Scanjet 4670 scanner sits upright in an easel style stand. Both scanners can be easily removed from their holders and used to perform freehand scanning.

The HP Scanjet 4670 scanner includes a transparent materials adapter (TMA) for scanning and archiving 35 mm slides and negatives. A TMA can be purchased separately for the HP Scanjet 4600 scanner. A suite of software applications - including the new and improved HP Photo & Imaging software with HP Instant Share technology and HP Memories Disc Creator software, I.R.I.S. Readiris Pro OCR software and HP Scanjet copying software - is included with both scanners.

Availability and Pricing
The HP Scanjet 4600 and HP Scanjet 4670 scanners expected to begin shipping in late September 2003 and are expected to sell for an U.S. estimated retail price of $149 and $199, respectively. The TMA can be purchased for the HP Scanjet 4600 scanner as an accessory and is expected to sell for an U.S. estimated retail price of $49. Additional information about all HP scanners is available at www.scanjet.hp.com.
