This is certainly one of the most-anticipated reviews in recent memory: Canon's new and *amazingly* low-priced digital SLR, the "Digital Rebel."

Canon's made something of a habit of shocking their competitors and delighting consumers with ever-lower prices on digital SLRs, but the Canon EOS Digital Rebel is truly a breakthrough in that regard. With most of the functionality of the wildly popular EOS-10D, it sells for $999 *with* a very nice 18-55mm zoom lens.

Does its performance measure up though? Read my review for all the details, but I'd have to say "yes, definitely." While not yet in final production trim (I found a few exposure bobbles that seem like prototype malaise, as other reviewers didn't see them), the image quality and general performance were very, very good. I'm not personally wild about the plastic body, nor about some of the AF and metering features Canon left off from the 10D, but this is an absolutely amazing camera for the price. It's not only going to cause the likes of Nikon and Olympus some heartburn in the digital SLR marketplace, but I expect it's going to seriously cut into the sales of high-end rangefinder cameras by those companies, Sony, and most everyone else playing at the top of the market.

Without a doubt, the "camera of the year," at least so far. Check it out!
