A press release from Pretec Electronics Corp. announces that it is near to shipping samples of 6GB CompactFlash cards, and is planning even bigger things for next year.

Initially announced last March, the 6GB Type-II CompactFlash card is being demonstrated at the Computex 2003 show in Taipei, Taiwan. Samples will be available next month at a cost of US$7499, and mass delivery should begin by the end of the year. Sustained write speed for the card is quoted as 7MB/second (about 48X, using Lexar's terminology where a 1X card is considered to have a speed of 150KB/second), and sustained read speed is given as 8MB/second.

The press release also notes that Pretec is planning a 12GB CompactFlash card to be demonstrated by next summer, Secure CF cards with data encryption functionality, and a new Platinum CF card line from 128MB to 6GB based on military / industrial CF cards with metal construction that is designed to triple the flexural (bending) strength.

Pretec demonstrates 6GB Rugged CF card
