Nikon's D2H digital camera. Courtesy of Nikon, with modifications by Michael R. Tomkins. Nikon drops D2H pricing?

An email from regular contributor Peter Burian alerted us to what looks to be a fairly significant price drop on Nikon's D2H digital SLR.

Originally announced at around $3500, Peter noticed that the D2H is now listing for $1995 at Roberts Imaging, and we found similar pricing from other reputable dealers such as Adorama, B&H, and Ritz Camera in our own checking.

First announced in July 2003, the D2H was targeted at professionals, and featured a 4.1 megapixel imager, burst speed of eight frames per second, 37ms shutter lag, and more - all in a rugged magnesium alloy body. With the price now only a few hundred dollars more than that of prosumer SLRs from a variety of manufacturers, this will doubtless be an attractive proposition for readers looking for an SLR that offers a combination of speed, reliability, and a Nikon F lens mount.

Peter K. Burian is a Canadian stock photographer and a regular contributor to three print magazines: eDIGITAL PHOTO, Shutterbug, and PHOTO LIFE. He is the author of Mastering Digital Photography and Imaging.

Thanks to Peter Burian for this item!
