February 20th, 2005, PMA, Florida, USA: Phase One®, a world leader in professional digital imaging camera backs and software, announces tethered support for all Canon® EOS DSLR cameras (1Ds MKII/ 1D MKII / 1Ds / 1D / 20D/ 10D / 300D / D60 / D30) in their Capture One RAW Workflow Software. This extended tethered support will be available in Capture One PRO v3.7 and will be a free update for all existing owners of Capture One PRO. The release date is May, 2005.

Shooting RAW with Capture One
“More professional photographers are realizing the wonders of shooting RAW, including more flexibility, efficiency, and enhanced image quality. At Phase One, we are pleased to see this embracement of RAW from professional users, camera manufacturers and software suppliers because it means that Capture One is adding value to the professional photographer’s workflow”, Trine Voss, Capture One VP Sales & Marketing, stated.

The tethered support update of Capture One PRO will be free of charge for all existing users and will not count as one of the two major updates included with Capture One PRO. Therefore, there is no reason why professional photographers who wish to enjoy the benefits of shooting RAW should wait until May to buy Capture One PRO.

Why tether your DSLR camera?
For the professional shooter there are many advantages when working tethered:

  • Better preview capabilities
  • More disk space (no need to rely on memory card availability)
  • Easy file management
  • Ability for clients and creative directors to “observe” the images directly as they are shot

Working in the studio does not necessary require the same freedom of movement that on-location shooting such as event, wedding or reportage does. Therefore, there is no reason why DSLR shooters should not take advantage of the benefits that shooting tethered to a computer provide. The instant feedback observed immediately on a large color managed monitor will enable you to verify your images and wrap up the job faster than when using memory cards. Also, you never run out of disk space and do not have to change cards in the middle of a session. In addition, you can set up your capture folder and organize your workflow before you shoot. This means that session folders and files can be named and structured in advance. For catalogue photographers, who shoot numerous products every day, this type of file organization will save them valuable time compared to loading in images from a memory card.

Tethered support through Canon’s camera driver
"We have had many requests from potential as well as existing users about being able to supporting tethered operation with the latest high-end Canon cameras. Therefore, it is a great pleasure to announce that Capture One v3.7 will offer tethered support for the 1D MKII, 1Ds MKII as well as the other Canon EOS models”, states Kenneth Bedsted, Vice President R&D software. He continues: “Canon has evolved their camera drivers for both the Mac and PC platforms to the point where we can offer stable tethered operation for the complete line of Canon DSLR cameras. We are very pleased with this development”.

Remote capture capability
For Fuji, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Konica-Minolta users Capture One PRO already offers a ‘watch folder’ function. With this advanced functionality you can shoot tethered using third party software while Capture One accesses the RAW files as soon as they appear in the capture folder While there are clearly advantages to shooting tethered natively from within Capture One PRO, this alternate workflow offers most of the advantages of shooting tethered.

Capture One RAW workflow software comes in two different versions the Capture One PRO at $/€ 499 and Capture One LE (no tethered operation) at $/€ 99, to reflect the different needs from professional photographers. Please see the comparison chart for details on the individual versions located at www.phaseone.com or at your local Capture One dealer site. At www.phaseone.com you will find your local dealer as well as our official web sales and support sites.
