Canon SLR Firmware Updates Released
By
(Tuesday, May 31, 2005 - 14:08 EDT)

Per our earlier news story of May 19, firmware updates have now been released for the EOS-1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II, and EOS 350D Digital Rebel XT

Back on the 19th of this month, we reported on issues with camera lockups and lost buffered images in the Canon EOS-1D Mark II and the EOS-1Ds Mark II.

Canon Japan has now released firmware updates for the 1D Mark II, the 1Ds Mark II, and the Rebel XT, which apparently address the problems with the first two cameras "hanging" under some circumstances. The XT patch deals with exposure problems with some lenses, an auto power off problem, and white balance issue with external flashes. It doesn't appear that any of these updates address the compatibility issue with Lexar 80x cards that we also discussed in our May 19 news item. Here's a list of what's covered by the firmware changes for each of the models involved:

EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT firmware update version 1.0.2

This firmware update incorporates the following improvements:

  1. Fixes the phenomenon of extreme underexposure when using some lenses.
  2. Fixes the phenomenon of auto power off function failure when auto power off is set more than 2 minutes.
  3. Fixes the phenomenon of incorrect white balance when using an external flash.

This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware versions up to 1.0.1 installed. By installing this update, the phenomena will be fixed, and the affected cameras can be used without these problems. If your camera's firmware is already version 1.0.2, it is not necessary to perform this update.

EOS 1D Mark II firmware update version 1.2.2

This firmware update (version 1.2.2) includes the following additional functions and improvements:

  1. When pressing the DISPLAY button immediately after shooting, the LCD monitor would turn completely white, the camera would hang, and the images in the buffer memory would be lost. Countermeasures for this issue have been incorporated into this update.
  2. Errata in the German and Russian language displays have been corrected.

This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware version up to 1.2.1 installed. If your camera's firmware is already version 1.2.2, it is not necessary to perform this update.

EOS 1Ds Mark II firmware update version 1.1.2

This firmware update (version 1.1.2) includes the following additional functions and improvements:

  1. When pressing the DISPLAY button immediately after shooting, the LCD monitor would turn completely white, the camera would hang, and the images in the buffer memory would be lost. Countermeasures for this issue have been incorporated into this update.
  2. Errata in the German and Russian language displays have been corrected.

This firmware update applies to cameras with firmware version up to 1.1.1 installed. If your camera's firmware is already version 1.1.2, it is not necessary to perform this update.
