Nikon's D2X digital camera. Courtesy of Nikon, with modifications by Michael R. Tomkins. Nikon D2x In-Depth Image Analysis added

A reader alerted me to the fact that our current Nikon D2x review was missing its Imatest-generated quantitative data.

It turned out I'd had some of this up there early on, before the main review was published, but then it got lost in the shuffle of posting the full review. I've gone back and updated my earlier comments, incorporating new dynamic-range results calculated with a more recent version of Imatest (v1.3.8). The updated version of the program does a better job of handling data from camera with very wide dynamic ranges like the Nikon D2x. The results are very impressive indeed, with an absolute dynamic range limit of 9.8 f-stops, and a usable range of 7.75 - 8.9 stops, depending on how much noise you'll tolerate in the shadows. (Very impressive!)

The new in-depth analysis page also has examples and analysis of the Nikon D2x's image quality at various ISO levels, looking at how the camera trades off image detail against image noise, and how the color saturation varies over the full ISO range. Bottom line, this is an absolutely fantastic camera, a real breath of fresh air for Nikon shooters. Check out the new in-depth analysis page for all the details...
