Alongside announcements from Canon and Fujifilm, Sony USA has also now posted advisories on a range of CCD-based digital imaging products that may experience problems in operation.

NOTE: Since this item was published, we have compiled a new and more in depth source of information on this issue. Please consider visiting our article CCD Sensor Problems in Consumer Imaging Products as well as (or instead of) this item!

As with the other companies, Sony notes that heat and humidity may exacerbate the problem. A note on Sony Asia's website says that digital still cameras, camcorders (including professional models), and handheld computers manufactured between October 2002 and March 2004 may exhibit the problem. Given the volume of different models that Sony produces, the list is not surprisingly lengthy.

We're reproducing the list of still camera models here, since these are the main focus of our site. Also affected is the Clie PEG-NZ90 handheld computer. Owners of camcorders can check for their specific models on , with over a hundred camcorder models being affected.

Important Notice About Your Sony Product

Posted: 10/03/2005

Thank you for your support and patronage of Sony products.

It has recently come to our attention that a limited number of products, manufactured prior to March 2004, that incorporate a certain type of image sensor device (CCD) may exhibit the following:
  • When the product is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder exhibits either a distorted image or no image at all.
We have determined that this only occurs in a limited number of devices, but may be accelerated if they are exposed to hot and humid environments.

From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling to service to correct this issue.

Please contact the Sony Customer Information Services Center for further assistance at 1-866-703-7669.

To find details for your specific product bought in the USA, visit the
Sony Electronics Support and Registration website, and browse to your product through the left-hand menu. If your product is affected, you'll find a product alert describing what to do, which will likely mirror that for the F717 above.
