(Monday, November 13, 2006 - 17:28 EST)

At the end of last week, Ricoh unveiled a new digital camera model from its global headquarters in Japan.

The Ricoh Caplio RR730 is an approachable-looking seven megapixel digicam with a 3x optical zoom lens and Secure Digital storage slot (plus 32MB of built-in memory). Images must be framed (and of course, can be reviewed) on the camera's 2.5" LCD display, which has a fairly average resolution of 115,000 pixels; there's no optical viewfinder provided, as is the case with most digicams these days unfortunately.

The Ricoh RR730 offers resolutions from 640 x 480 through to 3072 x 2304 pixels, and most functions are controlled automatically, although there are four scene modes plus 2.0EV of exposure compensation in 1/3EV steps provided to give the photographer a little more control over how their photos turn out. ISO sensitivity ranges from 64 to 200, and can be controlled automatically or manually. There are also four manual white balance presets plus the obligatory auto mode, but no custom or "hold" mode to let the photographer provide the camera with a known neutral reference.

Pricing and availability have not been disclosed at this time.
