Image copyright Imaging-Resource.com, 2005 Canon Rebel XT body available for under $500

We don't normally mention stuff like this, but I think it's something of a milestone when a high quality SLR drops so low.

The 8 megapixel Canon Digital Rebel XT body only can be purchased for just under $500 at several retailers, both black and silver models. Those already owning a few Canon-mount lenses might want to take a closer look. It could improve your speed when out in the field to have one zoom range or a wide prime on one camera and a telephoto on the other, obviating the need for so many lens changes. Though now supplanted by the 10 megapixel Rebel XTi, the Rebel XT was no slouch, capturing quality images that rivaled its brothers the 20D and 30D.

Through my own observations over the past three years, I've noticed these prices drop steeply while stock is high in the first two weeks of December, then start back up again as Christmas closes in. This used to be more with consumer all-in-one digicams, but now seems to apply to consumer SLRs as well. The XT did a similar dance right before the XTi was announced this last August, with prices quickly rebounding to higher than pre-sale period prices. Retailers will probably work hard to get rid of XT stock this season, so keep watching for hot sales.

Also be sure to check reviews of retailers to weed out the reputable from the dishonest. We've long since weeded out a few disreputable retailers from our PriceGrabber links, so with proper caution, you should be just fine shopping for anything you need this holiday season. Beware prices much lower than this, as I've already seen one of the aforementioned "weeded" retailers advertising this camera for hundreds less.

Try our Check Prices link for just about anything you need. Note: If you're searching for something other than cameras, be sure to change the Search option to "All Products," as it's set to "Search Current Results" by default; or just go to imaging-resource.pricegrabber.com

Finally, don't forget to see our very thorough reviews of all the best cameras on the market. We don't just tell you what we think and why, we give you complete access to every test shot we make. You can download and print whatever you like on your own printer, or even take to a print kiosk to see exactly what the camera can do.

Happy Holidays, and happy shopping from all of us at Imaging-Resource.com!
