In its second announcement of the day, Samsung has taken the wraps off the Samsung L830 digital camera, featuring a Samsung NV-branded f/3.0 - f/5.6, 3x optical zoom lens with a fairly standard 38 - 114mm equivalent focal range.

The L830 couples this with an eight megapixel CCD imager that yields a maximum resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels. The L830 also includes a 2.5" LCD display that has 230,000 pixels; likely to help keep price and complexity down, this LCD is the sole method of framing images, as the Samsung L830 forgoes any form of optical viewfinder.

The L830 keeps things simple by offering automatic control of most image parameters, but enthusiasts will be pleased to know it offers a manual exposure mode as well. Autofocus is via contrast detection and includes Multi AF, Center AF, Face Recognition AF modes. ISO sensitivity ranges from 80 to 1600 equivalent, and the L830's ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction) system automatically increases ISO to avoid blur in low-light situations. Exposures are determined with multi-pattern, spot or face recognition metering, and the user can tweak the exposure with +/-2.0EV of exposure compensation, in 0.33EV steps.

L830 shutter speeds range from 1/1500 to 8 seconds in manual mode, and 1/1500 to 1 second in all other modes. White balance can be controlled automatically, manually, or via one of five presets. The Samsung L830 has a six mode internal flash, and eleven scene modes that help beginners get the most from their camera without needing to understand the subtleties of exposure variables. As well as still images, the L830 can also capture movies (with audio) at resolutions up to 800 x 592 pixels in AVI (MPEG-4) format.

The L830 stores images on Secure Digital or MultiMediaCard media, as well as the newer SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) cards, or in 16MB of built-in memory. The L830 also offers USB 2.0 High-Speed computer connectivity, while power comes from a proprietary Lithium Ion rechargeable battery.

The Samsung L830 ships this September, at a suggested price of US$229.

Original Source Press Release:

Samsung Camera Extends L-Series with the Launch of the L830

Slim design, higher-resolution and creative controls highlight the new 8MP DSC

Secaucus, NJ (July 11, 2007) – Samsung today announced the launch of the L830 – one of two new additions to its popular L-Series of compact digital cameras. Boasting a high-resolution 8.1 mega pixel imaging sensor, the L830 is packed with advanced functions and controls that are sure to enhance the imaging experience of today’s digital snap-shooter.

In a slim, aluminum body measuring 3.74” x 2.32” x .83”, the L830 packs a 3x optical zoom SHD lens, with a maximum shutter speed of 1/1,500 sec. to help capture fast moving objects. With 9 scene modes, including Children, Landscape, Close-Up, Text, Sunset, Dawn, Backlight, Fireworks, Beach & Snow, the L830 gives shooters the ability to capture the best image possible in a variety of settings. Users can also review, edit and customize their images right on the camera, using the bright 2.5” LCD screen.

By using the camera’s special effects "E" button, users can easily access various creative controls, including options for resizing and rotating images, adjusting brightness, contrast and saturation levels, fixing red eye, and manipulating color such as saving captured images as B&W, Sepia, Red, Blue, Green, and Negative. Additionally, with the color filter option, shooters can choose to keep a section of their saved image in color and leave the rest in black and white.

With an ISO equivalent of 1600 and Samsung’s ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction) image stabilization system, the L830 gives shooters the ability to capture sharp and clear images when in low-light situations. ASR is a proprietary technology that helps to minimize the effects of hand shake and ensure that the best shots are captured in dimly lit conditions or where the use of a flash is not desirable.

By using the L830’s Face Detection feature, which detects up to nine faces and automatically adjusts focus and exposure to ensure better composition and image quality, shooters can easily improve the photos that they take of their family and friends. The L830 is also equipped with Samsung’s i-movie mode, which offers users SVGA resolution (800x592), MPEG-4 video and advanced editing controls. By using the camera’s Successive Recording mode, users can pause, and then resume filming of video clips without having to save the clips as individual files. Additionally, users can operate the camera’s optical zooms while filming.

Enabling users to further express their creativity is the "Fun" feature. This unique feature allows shooters to create a composite photo by saving up to four individual images as one, highlight an image by sharpening the foreground and softening the focus of the background, as well as customize their saved images with photo frames, stickers of various shapes, and cartoon text bubbles. All images can be saved to the16MB of internal memory on the L830 or to an external SDHC/SD card with a guaranteed maximum of 4GB.
