"Early Morning," "Eruption," and "Cute" were chosen as our June winners. Congratulations to F. Monteiro, Michael Zelenski, and Mguna!

We're happy to announce the monthly winners of our Photo of the Day contest for June, 2007. Here's a look at June's winners, along with some comments from the judges:

First Place
Early Morning, by F. Monteiro
(F. Monteiro won a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Printer.)

This would have been a great photo of the bridge alone, but the inclusion of the runner in the shot made it much more interesting, creating contrasts of scale, form, and tone that engage the mind and eye both. A beautiful shot!

Second Place
Eruption, by Michael Zelenski
(Michael won a Canon PIXMA MP960 Printer.)

The extraordinary nature of the subject itself lends much of the drama to this shot, but the perfect timing and exposure, balancing the light on the mountain against the glow of the lava made it more than just a photo of a volcano. Likewise, the choice of angle and setting, including the reflection in the foreground lake further elevates it from the mundane.

Third Place
Cute, by Mguna
(Mguna won a Canon PIXMA iP6700D Printer.)

A "cute" subject (as the title suggests) helps this photo, but it's also a perfectly executed macro shot, with beautiful composition, flowing lines, perfect exposure, and beautiful, buttery-smooth bokeh in the defocused background. (Whether achieved with the lens alone or through the help of a photo editing application doesn't matter, it's a great shot no matter how it was arrived at.)

Ms. Poly Phemus, Ellen Devenny

Portrait-2, Rajesh Soni

Untitled Work - G. Stanaitis

Circling with Light, Aung Myoe

Green Sea Turtle, Glenn Cummings
