NIKON.GIF Nikon Releases Updates for Capture NX, Camera Control Pro (UPDATED)

We experienced a problem with the Mac updater, however, that we've just resolved.

Nikon has released updates for Capture NX, its image editing software based on U Point technology, and Camera Control Pro, its dSLR remote control software.

Capture NX Install Issue

We experienced a problem with version 1.3.2 of Capture NX, however. The new version quit on launch on Mac OS 10.04.11.

Nikon's advice was to uninstall Capture NX. An uninstaller can be found in the Applications/Nikon Software/Capture NX folder or by inserting the NX CD where a link to it is provided on the title page.

Unfortunately, uninstalling the application won't help the updater. It has nothing to update. So you'll have to reinstall the application first.

More unfortunately, you have to install the latest version of NX for the updater to correctly update the application. It can be difficult to tell which version of NX you have, since a number of releases seem to be labeled 1.3.0.

In our own case, our 1.3.0 was derived through a series of updates. It wasn't able to open D300 .NEF files. We restored 1.3.0 from our backup and looked at the Help>Update option to find 1.3.1. But that only got us a disk image of 1.3.0.

After we uninstalled the restored version, we dug into our D300 box and installed NX from the CD that ships with the D300. That too reported it was version 1.3.0 but it was able to read the D300 .NEF files we were previously unable to open in NX.

Was it really version 1.3.1 in disguise?

Apparently so, because running the 1.3.2 updater on it worked without a problem.

The lesson here seems to be that the updater only works with the latest version of NX. But you can't rely on the About box to reflect the version number.

That was confirmed by Nikon's David Bolger, Digital Imaging Tech Support specialist, who told us, "The splash screen at software startup may not display an accurate version number of the software. We've seen this on occasion after a 'minor' update, but if you open the software "ReadMe" file in the Applications / Nikon / Capture NX folder, the correct version will
appear at the top."

Too bad the installer doesn't check that before trying to update an unsupported version of the application.

After our successful update, our NX version reports it is version 1.3.1 with SPM version 1.3.2. The ReadMe file reports version 1.3.2.

Capture NX Update

Highlights of Capture NX 1.3.2 include:

• Support for D60 Raw images

• When Exposure Compensation was adjusted from Base Adjustments > Exposure Compensation while Picture Control settings were applied from Base Adjustments > Camera Adjustments > Picture Control, the sharpening effect was cancelled. This issue has been resolved.

• When images captured with the D1 and an AI Fisheye Nikkor 16mm f/2.8D lens, "Fisheye Lens" could not be selected from Base Adjustments> Lens Adjustments. This issue has been resolved.
