Canon USA and Japan have jointly released several items of note for owners of the company's EOS-1D Mark III and EOS-1Ds Mark III digital SLRs today.

According to the company, Canon EOS-1D Mark III firmware version 1.2.5 and Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III firmware version 1.1.4 both include the same updates, as follows:
  • Corrects a phenomenon in which a displayed image becomes pitch-black if it is zoomed in on during Live View shooting.
  • Corrects a phenomenon in which "busy" may continue to appear on the camera if the USB cable is disconnected during USB communication.
  • Changes the error indications that are displayed on the camera. The error indications are further clarified to make the causes of errors easier to identify, and so that adequate support can be provided to our customers.
Both cameras are also covered by two new service notices, as follows:

EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: AF Accuracy Adjustment
EOS-1D Mark III/EOS-1Ds Mark III: Abnormal Mirror Operation (Err 99)

It should be noted that the AF accuracy adjustment advisory is in addition to the previous EOS-1D Mark III AF mirror adjustment service notice. Free repairs are being offered for customers affected by the "Err 99" mirror problem, and Canon is also providing free AF accuracy checks and adjustments for customers experiencing problems with soft focus when using any but the central AF point.

Finally, Canon Japan has published a new manual entitled "EOS-1D Mark III AI Servo Auto Focus Manual" aimed at helping owners understand and get the most from their AF system.
