Update to C-990Z (Japanese version of D-490Z) announced...

Olympus Japan has today announced an update to its C-990Z digital camera, according to our friends at the digitalcamera.gr.jp website. The C-990ZS has a higher resolution LCD display (114,000 pixels instead of 61000 on the older model). It is also slightly faster, being capable of 1.5 frames per second for 5 frames where the old model was a tad slower at 1.3 frames per second for 5 frames. Video performance is also listed as improved over the C-990Z, with the new camera being capable of 23 seconds of high-res and 104 seconds of low-res video, and the old camera being able to record 15 seconds of high-res or 60 seconds of low-res video by comparison.

The C-990ZS is compatible with SmartMedia cards up to 128MB, whilst the C-990Z was listed as compatible up to 64MB - although in fact the older camera can also handle 128MB cards according to a report some time back from our friends at digitalkamera.de in Germany.

The only other detail we could see that differed in specification between new and old cameras is that the older model was apparently 0.1oz heavier than the new model, although this could just be a slight error in the specifications, and is almost negligible anyway...

The Olympus C-990Z was sold in the USA as the D-490Z. No plans to bring the C-990ZS to the US market have been announced at this time, nor has Japanese pricing info been released. Below are specifications highlights for the Olympus C-990Z, along with a link to the full specs in our digital camera database.
