Card reader line gets a price cut and a new model...

SCM Microsystems Inc. has today announced that it has added a new model to its line of ZiO! card readers. The new ZiO! supports Secure Digital and MultiMediaCard flash cards, which are used in Panasonic's iPalm digital camera and consumer devices such as MP3 players and the Palm m500 handheld organizer.

At the same time the company has announced a price-cut for the card readers, which are sold under its Microtech brand name. Previously sold at a recommended price of $39.99, the tiny card readers will now have a suggested retail price of $29.99.

The Microtech ZiO! card readers are about the size of a key fob, and feature USB connectivity. They can either be plugged directly into a USB port, or into a USB extender cable (not included) if your USB ports are not easily accessible. Versions are available for SmartMedia, CompactFlash (Type-II compatible with Microdrive), and Secure Digital/MultiMediaCard (SmartMedia version pictured above as we've not yet obtained a press photo for the new version).

The readers are USB Mass Storage Class compliant, meaning that on computers with Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Mac OS 9.x, no drivers will need to be installed to use them. On older operating systems, drivers are necessary (and included for Windows 98 and Mac OS 8.5+). Street prices for the readers, which are all available currently, seem to average around $20-25.
