September 11th - Remembering And Helping
14:30 EDT - As the search for survivors continues, the shocking news of last week's terrorist attacks on the United States still dominates news coverage and remains fresh in our minds. CNN's 'Larry King Live' yesterday carried a particularly heart-breaking interview with the head of one of the firms worst-hit by the disaster. Brokerage firm Cantor Fitzgerald's Chairman and CEO, Howard Lutnick, described how his company's offices were on floors above the level at which the hijacked aircraft crashed, effectively trapping employees and leading to a large number of dead and missing employees.

It seems likely that the company will have lost 1000 or more employees, and understandably they are struggling to cope with the devastating impact of this, both emotionally and financially. We would like to appeal to our readers, if you can even afford just a few dollars, to make a donation through the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund website. Information for employees and relatives can be found on Cantor's main website. If you know the whereabouts of any Cantor employees or are an employee who has not yet checked in with the company, you can find contact information here.

The Land Of The Free And The Home Of The Brave

For information on other ways to offer help victims of the terrorist attacks, please read our earlier news item. This item also contains an important warning against fraudulent telemarketing scams seeking to profit from the disaster, and you can find more helpful information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency website.

We Will Remember
11:25 EDT -
The Land Of The Free And The Home Of The Brave

Today has been declared a national Day of Prayer and Remembrance in the United States by President Bush, and we would ask readers to please take a moment of their time during the day to remember the victims of this international tragedy. We'd also pay tribute to the many brave heroes who are working hard at the scenes of the attacks - searching for survivors, giving medical aid, removing debris, uncovering evidence and much, much more.

We also want to alert readers to a statement that was recently made by New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. We were concerned to hear that a telemarketing agency is making phone calls, in particular targetting senior citizens, soliciting donations in the wake of the disaster. Mayor Giuliani advised that if you receive such a call, you should contact your local police department to let them know. There are apparently no official efforts to solicit funds by telemarketing, and you should not give money to anybody who phones you. If you want to offer a donation, instead read our earlier news item to find out ways in which you can do so.

Thoughts and prayers
13:33 EDT - It was with great shock that we woke up this morning to news of numerous terrorist attacks on the United States. If you are not aware of the situation, you can find ongoing coverage at Yahoo; in a nutshell, three aircraft have been hijacked and crashed into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington DC. We've also seen reports of a fourth hijacked aircraft crashing and possible bomb explosions, and the entire US is grinding to a halt as all airports and many goverment offices and public buildings have been closed, and all inbound aircraft diverted to Canada.

We're at a loss for words right now as we try to understand exactly what has happened - not even a year ago we stood at the top of the World Trade Center ourselves, and we have friends in New York who we pray have not been involved in this tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the countless people who have been affected by these terrorist acts, and the families of those who have died. The only way we can think of in which readers can assist is by giving blood - with what we'd expect to be large numbers of people who will need blood transfusions every little bit is likely to help.
