The Nikon Coolpix L100 couples a ten effective megapixel image sensor with a powerful Nikkor-branded 15x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a useful 28mm wide angle to a 420mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.5 to f/5.4 across the zoom range. Not only does the Nikon L100 offer true mechanical image stabilization - an absolute must given the strength of the zoom lens - but it also has the ability to vary its sensitivity automatically from a minimum of ISO 80 to a maximum of ISO 800 equivalent ordinarily, and from ISO 720 to 3,200 equivalent in high sensitivity mode - so it should certainly be able to freeze camera shake and subject motion.

The Nikon L100 is capable of focusing to 1.8 feet (50 centimeters) ordinarily, and as close as 0.4 inches (one centimeter) in macro mode. Coolpix L100 images must be framed and reviewed on the camera's 3.0", 230,000 dot LCD display; as you'd expect for a long zoom camera there's no true optical viewfinder, and likely in the interests of saving costs there's no electronic viewfinder either. Images are stored on Secure Digital cards, including the newer Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) types, or in a reasonably generous 44MB of built-in memory. Power comes courtesy of four AA batteries, with alkaline disposables included in the product bundle.The alkalines are rated as good for 350 shots to CIPA testing standards, while Lithium batteries are rated for 900 shots. Other Coolpix L100 features 15 scene modes, a Sports Continuous mode capable of capturing up to 30 3-megapixel frames at 13 frames-per-second, and Nikon's Smart Portrait System comprising of in-camera Red-Eye Fix, Face Priority AF, Smile Mode, and Blink Warning.

The Nikon Coolpix L100 will be offered from April 2009, with expected pricing of $280 or thereabouts.
