The Nikon Coolpix L20 couples a ten effective megapixel image sensor with a Nikkor-branded 3.6x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a rather tight 38mm wide angle to a 136mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.1 to f/6.7 across the zoom range. There's no true mechanical image stabilization on this model, but the Nikon L20 does have the ability to vary its sensitivity automatically from a minimum of ISO 64 to a maximum of ISO 1600 equivalent - so it should be able to freeze camera shake and subject motion at the expense of some image noise / detail.
The Nikon L20 is capable of focusing to one foot (30 centimeters) ordinarily, and as close as two inches (five centimeters) in macro mode. Coolpix L20 images must be framed and reviewed on the camera's 3.0", 230,000 dot LCD display as there's no optical viewfinder on this model. Images are stored on Secure Digital cards, including the newer Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) types, or in 20MB of built-in memory. Power comes courtesy of two AA batteries, with alkaline disposables included in the product bundle. The alkalines are rated as good for 240 shots to CIPA testing standards, while Lithium batteries are rated for 630 shots.
The Nikon Coolpix L20 will be offered from February 2009, with expected pricing of $130 or thereabouts. The only body color available in North America will be deep red.
