The Nikon Coolpix S230 couples a ten effective megapixel image sensor with a Nikkor-branded 3x optical zoom lens that offers 35mm-equivalent focal lengths from a 35mm wide angle to a 105mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.1 to f/5.9 across the zoom range. As well as true mechanical image stabilization, the Nikon S230 offers the ability to vary its sensitivity manually from a minimum of ISO 80 to a maximum of ISO 2,000 equivalent - so it should be able to adequately freeze camera shake and subject motion.

The Nikon S230 is capable of focusing to two feet (60 centimeters) ordinarily, and as close as four inches (ten centimeters) in macro mode. Coolpix S230 images must be framed and reviewed on the camera's 3.0", 230,000 dot LCD display as there's no optical viewfinder on this model. Images are stored on Secure Digital cards, including the newer Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) types, or in a relatively generous 44MB of built-in memory. Power comes courtesy of a proprietary EN-EL10 Lithium Ion rechargeable battery that's rated as good for 160 shots to CIPA testing standards, and is included in the product bundle.

The Nikon Coolpix S230 will be offered from February 2009, with expected pricing of $230 or thereabouts. The body color selections available in North America will be Plum, Jet Black, Night Blue, Gloss Red and Warm Silver.
