The Nikon Coolpix S640 features a sleek, compact body housing a 2.7-inch LCD with coatings that aim to prevent reflections, and to repel smudges and moisture. The Nikon S640 offers twelve megapixels of resolution, and 6,400 equivalent at full resolution, and the S640 also includes true mechanical image stabilization. The Nikon Coolpix S640 includes what the company terms "Optical VR Image Stabilization", and also offers the ability to use high ISO sensitivities that help freeze motion at the expense of image noise and/or subject detail.
Nikon's Scene Auto Selector mode gives the camera the ability to automatically select the correct scene mode for the situation - be it a landscape, portrait, or perhaps a macro photo. When in portrait mode, the Nikon Coolpix S640 also offers both a smile shutter function wherein the camera automatically releases the shutter when the subject of your photo smiles, as well as a blink warning that displays a message on-screen if your subject's eyes weren't open. There's also a skin softening function that offers three different strength levels, and helps conceal blemishes in portrait photos.
For viewing images on a television, the Nikon S640 has standard-definition video output with NTSC / PAL compatibility. A rechargeable EN-EL12 Lithium Ion battery is included with the Coolpix S640, and should yield 270 shots on a charge. Both SD and SDHC memory cards can be used, and the S640 also includes 45MB of built-in memory..
The Nikon Coolpix S640 is available in a choice of four colors – "Calm Black", "Velour Red", "Precious Pink" and "Pearl White". It should ship in the USA from September 2009 with pricing of about $250.
