The Nikon Coolpix S710 features a sensor resolution of 14.5 megapixels, and a 3.6x zoom Nikkor lens with 28mm-equivalent wide angle. The Nikon S710's image sensor yields ISO sensitivities of up to 12,800 at reduced resolutions of three megapixels or below, although at the full 14.5 megapixel resolution this is limited to ISO 3,200 max. Uncomonly for a relatively compact camera, Nikon has included not just a Program shooting mode, but also Aperture- and Shutter-priority as well as a fully Manual mode. The Nikon S710's stainless steel body houses a 3.0-inch LCD with anti-reflective coating and 170-degree viewing angle.
Some clever automatic in-camera functions of the Coolpix S710 include Red-Eye Fix to correct for red-eye issues in flash photos, D-Lighting for insufficient light or too-bright settings, and Face Priority AF which can automatically focus on up to 12 subjects in a frame. Optical VR image stabilization is included and works by moving elements in the lens to correct for camera shake. A Motion Detection function helps out further by boosting ISO sensitivity (and hence shutter speeds) used by the camera so as to further reduce the possibility of shake and subject motion causing blurring in images. An additional feature is the Scene Auto Selector Mode which will choose the appropriate mode based on the detected shooting situation - Close-up, Portrait, Landscape, Backlight, Night Portrait or Night Landscape modes.
The Nikon Coolpix S710 comes with Coolpix Software Suite for image editing and organizing, as well as an EN-EL12 rechargeable Li-ion battery. Images are stored on SD or SDHC cards (but not MMC types), as well as 42MB of internal memory. The camera is available in a choice of Graphite Black, Deep Red, or Brilliant Silver color in September 2008 at a price of US$379.95.
