Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd Performance

Timing and Performance

Good to average speed for a consumer camera. Excellent pre-focus shutter lag performance.

Startup/Shutdown
Power on
to first shot
1.6 seconds
Time it takes for LCD to turn on and lens to deploy.
Shutdown
1.5 seconds
How long it takes to retract lens and stow in your pocket.
Buffer clearing time
6 seconds
(continuous LF JPEG)
Worst case buffer clearing time. -- This is the delay after a set of shots before you can remove the card. Some cameras won't retract their lenses and shut down until the buffer is cleared.
Mode switching
Play to Record,
first shot
1.2 seconds
Time until first shot is captured
Record to play
3.9 seconds
Time to display a large/fine file immediately after capture
Display
recorded image
1.5 second
Time to display a large/fine file already on the memory card.
Shutter response (Lag Time):
Full Autofocus Wide
0.56 second
Time from fully pressing shutter button to image capture, zoom lens at wide angle position.
Full Autofocus Tele
0.45 second
Time from fully pressing shutter button to image capture, zoom lens at telephoto position.
Prefocused
0.017 second
Time to capture, after half-pressing and holding shutter button.
Continuous AF
0.55 second
This mode usually shows no speed increase with our static subject; we have no way to measure performance with moving subjects
Manual focus
0.30 second
For most cameras, shutter lag is less in manual focus than autofocus, but usually not as fast as when the camera is "prefocused"
Cycle time (shot to shot)
Single Shot mode
Large Fine JPEG
1.90 seconds
Time per shot, averaged over 20 shots
Single Shot mode
640x480 JPEG
1.46 seconds
Time per shot, averaged over 20 shots
Single Shot mode
RAW
5.90 seconds
Time per shot, averaged over 20 shots
Early shutter
penalty?
YES
Some cameras refuse to snap another shot if you release and press the shutter too quickly in Single Shot mode, making "No" the preferred answer
Continuous Top 3 mode
Large Fine JPEG
0.43 second (2.34 frames per second);
3 frames total;
6 seconds to clear
Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first
Continuous Top 3 mode
640x480 JPEG
0.43 second (2.34 frames per second);
3 frames total;
4 seconds to clear
Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first
Continuous Long Period mode
Large Fine JPEG
1.78 second (0.56 frames per second);
3 seconds to clear
Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first
Continuous Long Period mode
640x480 JPEG
1.3 second (0.77 frames per second);
1 second to clear
Time per shot, averaged over buffer length or 20 shots, whichever came first
Flash recycling
7 seconds
Flash at maximum output
Download speed
Windows Computer, USB 2.0
1,258 KBytes/sec
Typical Values:
Less than 600=USB 1.1;
600-770=USB 2.0 Low;
771-4000=USB 2.0 High

The Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd's performance ranges from fast to just average, depending on the task at hand. Start-up time is reasonable considering the long lens, but not fast. Shutter lag at wide angle and telephoto zoom settings is fairly good, but "prefocus" times (half-pressing and holding down the shutter button before the final exposure) are blazingly fast, with a shutter delay of only 0.017 second. Shot-to-shot cycle times are about average these days, at about 1.9 seconds for large/fine JPEGs, and the camera captures frames continuously at this rate. Continuous-mode speed is on the slower side, at a little over a half frame/second, though the camera does capture continuously as space allows. That said though, Continuous Top 3 mode captures three frames at up to 2.34 frames per second, for very short bursts. The flash takes about seven seconds to recycle, also about average. Connected to a computer, download speeds are fast, so you won't feel a need for a separate card reader. Bottom line, the S6000fd is responsive enough for most family photo opportunities, but its standard continuous shooting mode is a bit slow for sports or wiggly kids. Those issues aside, overall performance is pretty good.

Battery and Storage Capacity

Battery

Moderate battery life with standard AA alkaline cells, but much better life with NiMH rechargeables.

Operating Mode Number of Shots
AA alkaline batteries
Rear-panel LCD or EVF
200
AA NIMH rechargeable cells
Rear-panel LCD or EVF
400

The Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd uses four AA batteries for power, and a pair of ordinary alkaline batteries are included with the camera. Though runtimes are increased with the NiMH batteries over alkalines, I strongly recommend picking up a spare set and keeping them freshly charged and on-hand for extended outings. (See our battery shootout page for information on actual measured capacities of various NiMH brands and capacity markings.)

The table above shows the number of shots the camera is capable of (on a fresh set of disposable batteries), based on CIPA battery-life and/or manufacturer standard test conditions.

Storage
The Fujifilm FinePix S6000fd accepts xD Memory cards, though no card is included; 10MB RAM is built into the camera.

Image Capacity with
10MB Internal Memory
Fine Normal
2,848 x 2,136 Images 3 6
File Size 3.0MB 1.5MB
2,048 x 1,536 Images - 12
File Size - 788KB
1,600 x 1,200 Images - 15
File Size - 626KB
640 x 480 Images - 77
File Size - 128KB

We strongly recommend buying a large capacity xD memory card at least a 512MB card, preferably a 1GB one, to give yourself extra space for extended outings. (Check the shopping link above, cards are really cheap these days, so no reason to skimp.)
