Canon PowerShot ELPH 115 IS Preview

Designed as an everyday pocket camera for photographers looking for an imaging upgrade over their smartphones, the Canon PowerShot ELPH 115 IS provides a lot of versatility at a reasonable price.

The Canon ELPH 115 IS features an 8x optical zoom lens (28-224mm equivalent) that can capture moderate wide-angle to moderate telephoto shots. Maximum aperture ranges from f/3.2 for wide angle shots to f/6.9 for telephoto. Canon's Intelligent IS system technology combats camera shake using one of six different stabilization modes depending on need, helping you capture smooth video and sharp still images. Meanwhile, Canon's Smart AUTO mode automatically identifies up to 32 different predefined shooting situations and quickly makes all the camera settings for you so you don't have to work hard to get the images you're looking for.

Inside the ELPH 115 IS, there's a 16-megapixel CCD sensor and DIGIC 4 image processor that operate in tandem to produce high-resolution shots and 720p HD video. ISO sensitivity, as typical of models in this price range, is only modest -- ranging from 100-1600. However, Canon's new ECO Mode works to save battery life and extend your shooting time. On the outside, the Canon ELPH 115 IS is pocketably small, and a little boxy -- though it shows off more rounded corners than some other ELPH models released last year. The back of the camera is dominated by a serviceable 2.7-inch, 230,000-dot LCD screen that you use as a viewfinder, playback monitor and information screen. Controls are relatively simple and straightforward, and include dedicated video recording and playback buttons.

The Canon PowerShot ELPH 115 IS will be available in black, blue, silver and pink for US$169.99, and is expected to start shipping in March 2013.
