Canon PowerShot ELPH 530 HS Preview

At just 0.78 inches thick, the Canon 530 HS has the classic box and circle design of the SD1000, but with the benefits of a 12x optical zoom lens and WiFi connectivity. On the back you'll find no buttons; only a 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen.

With the Smartphone encroaching on the pocket camera's traditional turf, we've seen quite a few changes this year, and to compete pocket cameras have grown touchscreens and now WiFi radios to enable quick uploading of images and videos to Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Starting in March, Canon's CameraWindow app is expected on the Apple App Store for the iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad, allowing image transfer from Canon cameras to iOS devices. May should see an app for Android devices as well.

But that's not all you'll find special about the Canon 530 HS. Its 10-megapixel CMOS sensor is paired with a powerful DIGIC 5 processor to offer high-sensitivity in low light, the kind of light we all encounter when indoors. The Canon ELPH 530's zoom lens ranges from 28-336mm, quite a long zoom for such a relatively slim camera. And the lens is optically image stabilized.

Its 3.2-inch LCD has 461,000 dots to its name, as well as a touchscreen control system for easy access to menus and even touch-based autofocus. The Canon 530 HS is also capable of capturing Full HD video. Smart Auto mode will choose a capture mode for you, based on 58 predefined shooting situations, or you can choose from among several Scene modes. An advanced Face ID system will store up to 12 faces for instant recognition and face priority shooting. Finally, the Canon 530 HS's Intelligent Image Stabilization analyzes camera movement and picks from among six different stabilization methods for the best image possible.

Available in either black or white, the Canon ELPH 530 HS slated to ship in April for US$350.
