(From Nikon lens literature) Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G, two normal zoom lenses compatible with Nikon DX-format digital SLR cameras.
The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G are 3.1x normal zoom lenses covering the 18-55mm range of focal lengths (effective angles of view equivalent to those of a lens with 27-82.5mm focal lengths in FX and 35mm [135] formats). They are the first "AF-P" lenses for Nikon digital SLR cameras, utilizing stepping motors to drive AF for fast and quiet autofocusing. In addition, they have a compact and lightweight design for which retractable barrels were adopted for excellent portability, and the use of two aspherical lens elements has resulted in superior optical performance with which various types of aberration, including distortion and spherical aberration, are effectively suppressed. The AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR is also equipped with a vibration reduction (VR) mechanism offering camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop* (with testing in accordance with CIPA standards) increase in shutter speed.

Sharp, petite and smooth!A lot of distortion, plastic mount, some aberrations.
Bought mine to use with my Nikon 1 cameras, and the DX cameras, and in an emergency functional with my D600 (lens hood off!).

Truly delightful with Nikon 1 cameras (you need the FT1 adapter, of course), excellent with DX, and at normal focal lengths OK with my old D600.
The VR is excellent, the weight delightful, and it works very well with a close-up filter.
I would have loved a metallic surface, like the Nikon 1 lenses (which are otherwise just as plastic).
I have tried it a bit with a Raynox DCR-250 close-up lens, and that works surprisingly well!
Re-review:
Tried snapping a few new frames (we used to say that, eh?!) and I stand with what I wrote, not bad but some distortion, and it seemed to have some vignetting at 18mm.
If you avoid fully open at 18mm, and not use it for architecture you're pretty safe! -

After having bought the outstanding AF-P 70-300mm DX VR lens, I thought I would try this AF-P 18-55mm because of the many great reviews. I have the original AF-S 18-55mm VR (not VRII) released in 2006 as the kit lens for my D3100, so I thought I would get this new AF-P lens for my D5600 as an upgrade.

What matters most for me, is lens sharpness. Other attributes can be corrected in post processing. I have to say that I am disappointed. It's not a bad lens at all, it's just that after many tests, I personally cannot detect improvement in sharpness over the 12 year old AF-S model. I'll still keep it and keep my original AF-S 18-55mm DX VR as a back up. If this one breaks, I know I won't be losing image quality if I use the older one. Yes, it's silent and the focus is near instantaneous. It's also smaller and lighter, so those are good points. It still has the plastic mount, and if you check eBay, the vast majority of the broken lenses that are on sale for parts, have a broken plastic mount. So be gentle with this lens. -
Lightweight, Very sharp for Kit lens, added more 1 glass (compared with old AF-S 18-55mm VR II), Quick Viewfinder Focus, Overide Focus, you don't need to set Manual focus first, Great VR and macroIt's all plastic, a discount lenses. Very limited Compatibilty. Barrel Distorsion At 18mm. soft corner At 35mm (still sharp enough). Strong Color lateral (yellow and blue) in 18mm
It straight out the box with my D5300, Viewfinder Focus is lot faster than before, lens is lightweight and feel good in hand,focus ring is extremely smooth too.

what i don't like there is no button in any side of the lenses
and the barrel distorsion is higher than most Kit lenses, in 18mm, the Lateral blue & yellow is quiet distracting for me, despite the incredible sharpness all around the images.
i do like a weight and sharpness, but stills, i like a button to find alternative way to set up VR,so i don't waste a time to tripping the menu.
so....it's huge let down?, NO!
VR work fine to me, with Incredible Optic Quality,Excellent Sharpness even Wide Open,and Lightweight. what a fantastic lenses in less than 150$

I bought a grey market copy of this lens as a companion to the grey market 70-300 AF-P I bought recently and reviewed at this site. I wanted it as a handy walkabout for my D7100, now sold in favor of a D7200 and two D7500s, with the bigger lens for longer range. Yes, it will serve that use well.

The obvious comparison was with my 18-55 AF-S VRII, which I have also reviewed at this site. Optically, this one is as sharp as the AF-S. I see no real difference. The big difference is in autofocus (much faster, just as fast as D-lens screw-activated AF) and in VR (striking improvement with indoor images at 1/4 second). Contrast and color resolution are the same in both lenses, i.e., pretty good.
Minimum focal distance is a bit less than with the older lens. So it's almost a macro lens. It becomes full macro with a 12mm extension tube. But like the older lens, this one won't autofocus with the tube. Unlike the older lens, however, manual override is right there with no switch to fool around with. So for real macro, you have the choice of switching to manual focus on the camera, or using the lens (with its automatic AF) and then turning the manual focus override on the lens when you want to zero in. Like most people, I think, I prefer manual focus for macro shots anyway.
With that simple expedient, it's almost in the same league as my 40mm macro. What little...very little...this lens might give up in resolution, is counterbalanced by excellent VR, which the 40 lacks.
So this lens is a winner as an all-purpose normal zoom...outdoors (scenery, flowers, etc.) and indoors (museums, etc.)...because of its great resolution, surprisingly good VR and close minimum focus.
Even if it doesn't come in a kit with the camera of choice, it's a good buy as a standalone. There's such a spread between Nikon USA and grey market price that I chose grey market as a real bargain.
Make sure your camera is compatible with this lens. On my D7200 and D7500s there's no problem, but with my D7100, I had to set Auto Distortion Control to OFF. I'm sure Nikon will issue a firmware upgrade. -
Good sharpness overall, especially at 55 mm. Close minimal focusing distance. Very compact and light. VR works fine. Focus is quiet, fast and accurate.Some purple and yellow chromatic aberrations in the corners of the frame No VR switch on/off button on the lens tube. All plastic. High distortion at 18 mm
I purchased this lens to use as a light and cheap alternative to my other glasses when I work in the forest. It works perfectly on my D 7200 after a small micro focus adjustment. At 18 mm one needs to close the aparture with two stops or so to get good sharpness in the corners of the frame. In the frame center all is fine despite of the focal length end closure. Chromatic aberrations are easily corrected in Camera RAW. For practical purposes the lens is optically nearly as good as other much more expensive lenses (better than af-s 18-55 VR2) - unless you want to print very big size pictures...
