Canon's SELPHY CP900 compact photo printer. Photo provided by Canon.No-fuss mobile printing: that's what Canon's new SELPHY CP900 compact photo printer is all about. Announced today and scheduled to ship this summer, the Canon CP900 targets camera phone owners with cable-free WiFi printing from both Android and iOS devices. The company is also aiming the SELPHY CP900 printer at owners of its PowerShot-series cameras, and those shooting with the WiFi-capable PowerShot ELPH 530 HS or 320 HS will likely be particularly interested in the new model.

The SELPHY CP900 can create borderless postcard (3.94" x 5.83") and card (2.13" x 3.39") prints, and uses dye sublimation technology with a resolution of 300 dots per inch. Prints have a clear protective coating to protect them from damage, and a DIGIC II-based Canon PowerShot camera should be capable of having a postcard print made in around 47 seconds.

To provide for viewing, selecting, and basic editing of images, the Canon CP900 printer has a 2.7-inch tilting LCD panel on its top deck. Editing functions include Black & White, Sepia, Vivid, Neutral and Positive Film effects, automatic red-eye correction, a skin smoothing algorithm, and a function that optimizes images to correct for backlighting and shadowed subjects.

The Canon SELPHY CP900 photo printer doesn't just offer simple camera connectivity. You can also free yourself from the power socket for printing in the field, by using the same Canon CG-CP200 charger adapter and NB-CP2L battery pack as for the SELPHY CP-810. (That model is quite similar to the CP900, but lacks WiFi connectivity, and adds a CompactFlash / Microdrive card slot.) Admittedly, there's still a short cable involved in using the charger adapter, but short of building a battery into the printer itself, it's the closest you'll find to a cable-free experience.

Of course, you can use the Canon SELPHY CP900 via USB, as well, should WiFi not be available on all your other photo gadgets.

The Canon SELPHY CP900 compact photo printer is priced at around US$100 in the US market. More details on the Canon website.
