As everyone knows, big, bad Hurricane Sandy is in the process of walloping the East Coast but these photos of an emptied out New York City show the (panicked) calm before the storm.

They're photos of some of New York's busiest transit hubs including Grand Central Station, Penn Station, and various subway stations, devoid of people after the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) shut them down last night as a preventative measure.

The images, which have been posted on the MTA's Flickr page, were captured with a variety of cameras including, primarily, a Canon PowerShot S95.

Stay safe and stay dry, everyone.
