Travel photographer Austin Mann made news last year when he pitted the iPhone 4S and then new iPhone 5 in a head-to-head showdown in Iceland. This year he decided to repeat the challenge with the iPhone 5S — and he was confident enough in its skills that he left his DSLR at home.

Mann traveled to Patagonia with the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S, trying them out against one another in the stunning Andean landscape. It should come as no surprise that the iPhone 5S is notably better than its predecessor, but Mann manages to show off a number of really quite impressive changes. Notably, a significantly wider dynamic range, more information that could be recovered via editing, better panoramas, as well as the new slow-motion video and burst modes.

He concludes the piece by saying:

This iPhone 5S beats out the 5 in every camera test and in many ways I prefer it to my DSLR.  Sure it has its pros & cons… but for the first time ever, I didn't bring my Canon 1DX and I didn't regret it one bit. That's saying a lot.

That's a big claim, and one that's bound to rile some people up. Put it seems that there are quite a number of professional photographers (like National Geographic's Jim Richardson) who seem more than happy with the photos that they can get from their smartphone.
