The so-called golden hour is the time of day when the sun is just rising, or just about to set, and the world is covered in a warm, golden light (hence the name golden hour.) It's the favorite time of day for many photographers, especially for those shooting landscapes or portraiture outside. Keeping track of when the golden hour starts and ends isn't easy, though, as it's a different time each day.

If you're planning a shoot in the morning, you may have to get up really early so you arrive at the location with time to spare before the sun rises. And it's basically the same at sunset, only without the 'getting up early' part. If you don't want to waste any time, though, an prefer to be at your shooting location at the exact right time, there is -- of course -- an app for that.

It's called Lumy, and what it does is to keep you up to date about when the sun rises and sets on any day at any place in the world. So no matter whether your shoot is in L.A., Alaska, or the Antartic, you'll always know when to be on location in order to make the most of the short time during which the sun's golden light gives photographs that special look.

But Lumy does more than just show you when the golden hour starts and ends, it also shows you weather information for up to five days ahead, so you can plan your shoot and pick a day that promises the best conditions. On top of that, you can also let Lumy notify you when golden hour starts.

Lumy is available for iOS devices on Apple iTunes for $1.99, which seems like a reasonable investment if you regularly shoot during the golden hour and need an easy and comfortable way to keep track of golden hour times.
