How to make $300 in camera gear with a tiny bee and a DSLR

Making $300 in Adorama cash with a nice shot of a colorful bee on a flower is a neat feat indeed, but that's just what Bryan Schwertner did by taking the first prize in our January POTD contest. And how about making $200 with a tight shot of a soaring snowy owl as our longtime contributing photographer Jimmy Marz did, or winning $100 with a compelling image of a baby snow monkey taking a dip from another of our longtime contributors, Steve Sampson?
Well, all they had to do was (a) capture a great shot and, (b) enter it into our Photo of the Day contest. (Can't be that hard, can it? Click the shutter button and then click the submit button!)
And the natural world didn't stop there this month, as the first runner-up in our competition was a soothing, tranquil shot of a mountain bighorn by Paul Keitz, while the second runner-up shot was another peaceful moment of clouds soaring over majestic mountain peaks in morning light by Anindya Phani. (These last two images had me craving another cup of coffee to help savor the peaceful moment of seeing them again.)

On further glance we're not entirely sure if those tranquil clouds in the last image are actually from the same image (lighting and focus seem to not correlate with the mountain peaks) and perhaps that's why it didn't make the winner's podium, but it's an intriguing shot to ponder all the same. We usually feature comments from our publisher Dave Etchells for the prize-winning images, and our apologies for missing this month as he's been out of the country for the CP+ show.
