In the world of photography, more important than anything is your portfolio of work. It’s what defines you, more so than any other characteristic about yourself or your business. Building a portfolio can be a challenge though. That’s because without having a portfolio in the first place, it’s hard to get paid work, which often leaves photographers shooting assignment after assignment for free in hopes of building their archives.

To help break down the important aspects of building a portfolio, Ted Forbes of The Art of Photography has shared a helpful video titled, How Do I Get Work With No Experience?

In the eight and a half minute video, Forbes answers a question from a viewer regarding how to build a portfolio when you’re just starting your photo career. Specifically, Forbes explains what you can do to avoid shooting for free, in an effort to build up your portfolio, which he says only weakens your brand.
