DJI is traditionally viewed as a drone company, but today they’ve unveiled a new product that proves the sky is most definitely not the limit; it’s just the beginning.

It’s called the Osmo and it’s the world’s first fully integrated, stabilized handheld 4K camera.

To develop Osmo, DJI took its knowledge of gimbals and camera systems to create a device that strives to let anyone capture high-definition, stabilized 4K footage without breaking the bank.

The Osmo uses DJI’s three-axis gimbal mounted onto an ‘intelligent’ handle with integrated controls for better stabilizing and framing a shot. Attached to the gimbal is a 4K, 12-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3” sensor and a 94° field-of-view lens.

To see what the camera sees and to adjust the settings, you can use a smartphone, which is snugly held in place via an integrated mount. Additionally, DJI has included a number of ‘smart filming functions’ within its app that allow users to easily capture panoramas, 360° views, long exposures and slow motion up to 120fps at 1080p.

If you’d rather shoot with a different device, such as a GoPro or smartphone, you can do that as well since Osmo uses a modular, universal mount.

Additionally, DJI notes Osmo was designed with their other cameras in mind, ‘making it the perfect accessory for everyone who already owns an Inspire 1 with a Zenmuse X3, a Zenmuse X5 Pro or a Zenmuse X5 Raw.’

Osmo’s handle has an integrated 3.5mm jack for those times when you prefer higher-quality audio recorded with an external microphone.

Additional accessories for the Osmo include a tripod mount, bike mount, universal mount and extension rod.

The Osmo is available for pre-order on DJI’s store for US$650 and will begin shipping October 15. For more information, head on over to DJI’s product page.
