We have all seen software and filters that can make your photographs look more like paintings, but what about going in the opposite direction? Researchers at UC Berkley have developed an AI which does image-to-image translation. They can transfer paintings into what looks like a photograph and vice versa. The team was also able to translate winter landscapes into summer landscapes, horses into zebras and apples into oranges.

Training a system to be able to make these translations and conversions is a very complicated process involving the team determining relationships between sets and designing algorithms which can accurately and consistently perform as expected. Unsurprisingly, it’s very complicated to break down the relationship between different styles into parts a machine can understand, but the team has created some impressive results.
