Landscape and travel photographer Thomas Heaton has been in the American west lately and his latest expedition has taken him to Death Valley.

While in Death Valley shooting video content for Wex Photo Video, Heaton witnessed a cloud inversion. This spectacular weather phenomenon drastically changed the appearance of the landscape. Per usual, Heaton breaks down his composition and goes behind the scenes of his landscape images. A particularly nice tip he gives is to look at a large, expansive landscape and then see if you can find smaller details in the scene. Using a long lens for landscape photography may be counterintuitive, but it can work very well. Sometimes the best landscape photograph can be a small portion of a wide-angle scene.
