A character portrait study with two pros: How to use light to bring out your subject’s personality

Photographers Daniel Norton and Joe McNally have collaborated in conjunction with Adorama to create a series of portrait study videos. In the first video, seen below, Norton and McNally work to utilize light to emphasize the character of their portrait subject.
In this case, Norton and McNally photographed an older woman, Mary, and found her to be a commanding, subtle presence. To capture this character, they wanted a soft, diffused light. This means that they needed a large light source, which was a Profoto B1X behind a large scrim with diffusing fabric. It's neat to see two experienced pros working behind the scenes.
